COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary (12685 East C Ave) is hosting a guided bird ID walk on Feb. 14 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. that meets at its Resource Center before heading to Wintergreen Lake, and it offers free admission on Feb. 15 for the Great Backyard Bird Count.  Battle Creek Enquirer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cracker Barrel updated its travel rules by directing employees to pay for their own alcohol while dining mainly at its locations (a cost-cutting measure amid a revenue drop) and postponing trips further into 2026 as part of guidelines in place since 2024.  Battle Creek Enquirer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Battle Creek recorded a high of 59° on Jan. 9 – it hit freezing at 32° on Jan. 17 and fell to -19° on Jan. 24 during a prolonged cold snap. Weather officials expect temperatures to warm soon.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Recent reports show more than half of the Great Lakes are iced over, with lake Erie nearly completely frozen. An Arctic front on Tuesday — pushing further growth as researchers expect additional build-up in coming days.  Battle Creek Enquirer

  • Monday's drawing did not produce a jackpot winner, and the next draw is today at 10:59 p.m. with a prize of at least $80 million (Michigan tickets are sold until 9:45 p.m.).  Battle Creek Enquirer

  • Calhoun County Treasurer Melinda Weaver and Independent Bank launched the Homebuyer Assistance Program today, offering eligible residents up to $8,000 toward down payment and closing costs on a primary home.   • Three Michigan pups from Kalamazoo and Muskegon are set to compete in Puppy Bowl XXII on Sunday, Feb. 8 on Animal Planet, Discovery, TBS, and truTV — the event will feature a kickoff show at 1 p.m. ET and a local watch party at Dirty Dog Bar and grille.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Readers cast their votes in the Battle Creek Enquirer's online poll as the contest to name the No. 1 high school cheerleading team was held, with entries from Battle Creek Central, Climax-Scotts, Harper Creek, Gull Lake, Homer, Lakeview, Pennfield, & Union City.
