CULTURE NEWS

  • A total lunar eclipse occurred early Friday morning and made the moon appear red—NASA explained that Earth’s shadow turns the moon red when it fully covers it, and local residents woke early to watch the rare blood moon.  Battle Creek Enquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Battle Creek Fire Department is hiring a new firefighter—applicants must be at least 18, have a high school diploma or GED and hold a valid driver's license. The process requires a written test, physical agility exam and oral test while offering certifications and benefits, with applications accepted until April 14.  FOX 17
  • Battle Creek will resume lead pipe replacement work next week. The city will close the 200 block of McKinley Avenue North on Monday and Bidwell Street West (between Bechman Avenue North and Fairhome Avenue) on Tuesday, with work starting at 8 a.m. and ending by day's end and only affecting homes with temporary water shutoffs.  102.7 WFAT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Federal officials announced that more than 75,000 32 ounce bottles of two International Delight coffee creamers (hazelnut and Cinnabon classic cinnamon roll) are under recall in Michigan due to spoilage and linked illness reports; consumers should throw away products with best-used-by dates of July 2nd and 3rd, 2025.  Battle Creek Enquirer

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Battle Creek residents can learn to start spring gardening with a new guide that lists ten easy-to-grow plants including potatoes, peas, lettuce, tomatoes, radishes, peppers, basil, cucumbers, strawberries and mint (advice from local gardening experts). Gardening expert Kaitlin Mitchell says these plants need simple care and clear instructions to help beginners succeed (tips to enjoy fresh produce this season).  Battle Creek Enquirer

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In Calhoun County the median home listing price was $209,900 in February, a jump from January’s $189,763—up 10.6% with homes selling in a median of 57 days compared to 66 days nationally. Data from Realtor.com for single-family homes and condos also shows that there were 38% fewer new listings than last year.  Battle Creek Enquirer

  • Holly Talbert from Climax-Scotts was named Enquirer Athlete of the Week after fans gave her 69 percent of the vote for her strong game in girls basketball. She helped her team win a Division 4 district title with a 45—41 win over St. Philip and move into the regionals.  Battle Creek Enquirer
