FINANCE NEWS

  • Battle Creek taxpayers must file their 2024 federal and state returns by April 15 (extensions to Oct. 15 are available) and are urged to e-file with direct deposit for faster refunds. The IRS explains that e-filed returns get processed in 3-4 weeks (paper returns take longer) while more than 2.1 million Michigan returns have already been processed.  Battle Creek Enquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan State Police reminded drivers that new child passenger safety laws will be enforced starting April 2. Parents must use the correct car seats, booster seats and seat belts for each child’s age and size—violators could face a fine.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • The City of Battle Creek will begin work on the Watkins Culvert and Utilities Improvement Project on March 31 to install a new watermain, sewer, and culvert replacement for improved safety. Watkins Road will be closed from Helmer Road South to Minges Road South until mid-May — then completely at Minges Road until July 11.  City of Battle Creek
  • Michigan's fishing season starts April 1 and the DNR announced that fishing licenses are now available for purchase (licenses are valid until March 31 and anyone 17 or older must have one). A free fishing weekend will let both residents and visitors fish without a license on June 7-8.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Battle Creek's city commission picked three finalists for the next city manager—Nathaniel Clark, Nathan Henne and Patrick Jordan—and will hold final interviews on April 10. Former city manager Rebecca Fleury retired in November after a long service.  102.7 WFAT
