CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Battle Creek Police arrested a local man in his early 30s on attempted murder charges after a shooting on the 40th block of West Spaulding Avenue Friday afternoon resulted in a victim with gunshot wounds—now stable at Bronson Kalamazoo Hospital—and two uninjured individuals inside a home as the investigation continues with no immediate public threat. 102.7 WFAT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting March 31, the City of Battle Creek will begin work on three downtown parking structures—Hamblin, Jackson, and Michigan avenues—repairing structural, waterproofing, and facade issues until August 31. City crews will trim trees on McCamly and Hamblin while managing closures so that users always have one open entrance and exit. City of Battle Creek
- ➤ Starting April 2, Michigan will raise unemployment benefit payments+the weekly maximum will go from $362 to $446 and claimants can receive benefits for 26 weeks; UIA will review claims filed since January 1 to add extra pay if needed. Future changes will boost maximum benefits further and raise the dependent amount+claimants should update their account details. Battle Creek Enquirer
- ➤ Battle Creek will close parts of Foster Avenue from Columbia Ave W to Lakeview Ave from March 31 to April 21 and keep Lakeview Ave closed until July as crews work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays replacing the old storm water sewer system and water main—pavement restoration will reopen Foster Ave by April 21. The project will also cause two lane shifts on W. Columbia Ave—diverting runoff from Goguac Lake to existing retention ponds—to maintain access during the improvements. City of Battle Creek
- ➤ Applications are now being accepted for the vacant Calhoun County Treasurer position in Battle Creek—candidates must be at least 18, a qualified elector and registered voter in the County and include a cover letter, resume, letters of support and references by April 25. Applicants will address the Committee during a public session on May 2 at 1:30 p.m.—the appointed Treasurer will serve until December 31 and must run in the 2026 general election to complete a term ending December 31, 2028. 102.7 WFAT

- ➤ Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA has voluntarily recalled the Our Family Traverse City cherry-flavored decaf ground coffee sold in Michigan due to a mislabeling error that classified the recall as Class II and began on March 13 — no illnesses have been reported and the coffee was distributed by The SpartanNash Company from Grand Rapids.
