COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Battle Creek introduced Tiyanna Williams as its first Community Development Fellow who will serve a 15-month term working with the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to support local projects. • Harbor Humane Society in West Olive has a 4-month-old puppy named Ash who is looking for a long-term home after living with two adults who could not care for him—he is friendly with people and other dogs and enjoys playing with squeaky toys.  FOX 17

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Morel mushroom season in Michigan runs from late April until mid-June with peak picking set for May as the Michigan DNR warns that warm, wet weather helps morels grow. The DNR advises foragers to use a knife for cutting mushrooms and a mesh bag for keeping them dry (plastic bags speed up decay).  Battle Creek Enquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan residents must update their driver's license or state ID to be Real ID compliant before May 7 if they plan to fly or enter federal buildings. The state urges locals to visit a local Secretary of State office with the proper documents—upgrading is free when renewing.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Battle Creek taxpayers must file their 2024 federal and state income taxes by April 15 (the final deadline for the season) and many have already received refunds totaling over $1.61 billion (as of March 24), while those needing more time can file for an extension until Oct. 15. E-filing and direct deposit remain the fastest ways to receive refunds.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Michigan's fishing season started April 1 — anglers 17 and older needed to purchase licenses and follow new catch rules, with licenses valid until March 31, 2026. The Department of Natural Resources said residents and nonresidents can fish without a license during a free fishing weekend on June 7-8 — an event that offers access to all in-season species.  Battle Creek Enquirer
