EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Federal education secretary Linda McMahon told state education officials she rescinded an extension for COVID grants — a decision that could cost 27 school districts up to $42 million in aid. State school superintendent Michael Rice warned that districts may have to cut classroom spending or use savings to cover costs for HVAC improvements and window upgrades, and Battle Creek Public Schools may lose $3.3 million in reimbursements. - ➤ The Michigan Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that the odor of marijuana alone was not enough to justify a search without a warrant, dismissing gun charges against a Detroit man whose car was searched in 2020—this decision comes nearly seven years after voters legalized adult marijuana use. - ➤ Michigan expanded unemployment benefits yesterday—raising the weekly maximum for new claims from $362 to $446 and increasing dependent benefits from $6 to $12.66.
