ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Tribal nations and environmental groups filed an appeal with the Michigan Supreme Court on April 3rd to stop Enbridge’s plan to encase the Line 5 pipeline in a tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac because they say the review did not fully assess risks of oil spills that could harm the Great Lakes and treaty rights. Enbridge (which said the tunnel would make the pipeline safer) noted that the Michigan Court of Appeals had affirmed the detailed work of the Michigan Public Service Commission on the project. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Army confirmed that the fourth soldier missing during a training exercise in Lithuania was found dead Tuesday (his family identified him as Troy Smith Knutson-Collins from the Battle Creek area). Three soldiers were found dead Monday in an armored vehicle after a week-long search that involved hundreds of U.S. and international rescue workers. WOOD TV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Beacon Health System, an Indiana-based operator, announced Thursday it has reached an agreement to purchase and run Ascension in southwest Michigan. The deal, subject to proper approvals and set to close in summer, will add 4 hospitals—35 outpatient centers and an ambulatory surgery clinic while patients see little change in care. FOX 17
- ➤ Kent County Health Department said on Tuesday that an adult resident tested positive for measles after traveling abroad and through New Jersey and Michigan. Health officials urge anyone who might have been at the same spots to call a doctor to help stop the spread — especially those at risk. FOX 17
