ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 79-year-old driver was seriously hurt after crashing into a stopped semitruck early Tuesday morning near Burlington Township when mechanical issues forced the truck to block both lanes on 11 Mile Road, and first responders extricated him and took him to a local hospital while the truck driver was not injured.  WOOD TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting this summer, Kellogg Community College will offer more than 60 day camps for youth ages 5 to 18 in subjects including arts and crafts, cooking, health care, STEM and sports. Registration is now open for camps that include 10 career programs (called 'Day in the Life' camps covering fields such as criminal justice and dental hygiene) with details available online.  Battle Creek Enquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and police across Michigan are watching for drivers using cell phones while driving. The Michigan State Police say a new hands‐free law imposes fines and community service for repeat violations and reported 15,441 distracted driving crashes in 2022—crashes dropped by 305 in 2023.  FOX 17
  • Today, residents met three City Manager finalists at the DoubleTree by Hilton atrium at 50 Capital Avenue from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.—the City Council will finalize the selection tomorrow after reviewing 20 applicants.  102.7 WFAT
  • The Battle Creek City Commission postponed its city manager candidate search activities—including public meet-and-greets scheduled tonight and Thursday at the DoubleTree by Hilton—after two finalists withdrew for personal reasons. Interim City Manager Ted Dearing will review the process and report back at Tuesday's meeting.  Battle Creek Enquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials in West Michigan confirmed two measles cases in Michigan after a traveler passed through Gerald R Ford International Airport two weeks ago—vaccination rates have fallen, increasing concerns about further spread. Dr. Jerry Evans warned that one case in a room of unimmunized people could infect 14—16 others, and residents are urged to seek medical care if symptoms occur.  FOX 17
