CRIME NEWS

  • Battle Creek Police responded early Thursday morning, April 17, to a reported fight and stabbing in the 40th block of S. 23rd Street—one 20-year-old victim attempted self-transport to Battle Creek Bronson and is in critical condition while a 22-year-old suspect is held for assault with intent to commit murder.  City of Battle Creek
  • A reported fight early this morning on 23rd Street near Iroquois Avenue in Battle Creek left a 20-year-old man in critical condition after being stabbed—police arrested a 22-year-old man charged with attempted murder.  FOX 17

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Cereal City Concert Band will hold its final home concert with conductor Stephen White on Sunday, April 27 at the Pennfield Performing Arts Center to mark his eight-year leadership. White will then lead a farewell performance at the Mid-Europe Wind Band Festival from July 5–14 as the band prepares to introduce a new conductor.  Battle Creek Enquirer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Calhoun County is hosting a free recycling event on April 28 from noon to 5:30 p.m. at Bailey Park, 1350 Capital Ave. NE—only residential materials like scrap metal, refrigerant items, electronics, and household hazardous waste will be accepted—and residents must remain in their vehicles using the entrance from Emmett Street onto Wagner Drive.  Battle Creek Enquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Battle Creek—partnering with Jones and Henry Engineers—is preparing an application for funding to remove and replace lead service lines to comply with Michigan’s Lead and Copper Rule. The city invites public comment on the draft plan until May 8 and will hold a public hearing at the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, May 6 at 7 p.m.  City of Battle Creek
  • Governor Whitmer signed an executive directive on Thursday asking the state health department to produce a report within 30 days on how proposed Medicaid cuts might affect Michigan, which covers 2.6 million people including many children, seniors, and those with disabilities. She said hospitals and clinics could lose funding and rural hospitals may struggle — a change that could force providers to cut services.  Michigan Public Radio
