ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early spring shipping on the Great Lakes has claimed many lives in past disasters including the Anthony Wayne wreck on April 28 and the Lambton tragedy around April 19—researchers note that roughly 6,000 ships have wrecked on the lakes, with about 1,500 in Michigan waters. Shipping season began in late March and crews continue to face risks from unpredictable spring storms as experts search for new wrecks.  Battle Creek Enquirer

CRIME NEWS

  • Michigan State Police are searching for William (Bill) Fairchild, a 60-year-old man last seen April 20 at the Holiday Inn in Emmett Township who is roughly 175 lbs and 6 feet 3 inches tall with brown eyes and gray, balding hair; anyone with information is urged to contact local authorities.  FOX 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Registration for fall classes is now open at Kellogg Community College and can be completed online or in person at any of its five campuses—nearly 300 course options include about 130 online classes, industrial trades, CNA, and workforce training modules. The fall semester runs from Aug. 25 to Dec. 12 and new degree and certificate programs will launch next school year.  102.7 WFAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Battle Creek is planning to transform the aging concrete banks along the Kalamazoo River with native plants to manage stormwater and improve the river's ecology. A team of experts will study the removal of the Monroe Street dam and other changes over the next 18 months—residents are invited to share ideas in a survey.  City of Battle Creek

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said the Lower Peninsula trout, walleye and northern pike seasons will open on April 26 and all anglers 17 and older need a valid fishing license. The licenses cost $26 for residents and $76 for non-residents, are valid through March 31 — details available in the regulation book — and can be purchased online or at licensed agents.  Battle Creek Enquirer
