ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A Monday evening wind storm left about 51,588 customers without power as of 8 a.m. today in parts of Calhoun, Kalamazoo, and Ottawa with Consumers Energy crews working to restore service; the utility said customers might receive an outage credit if power is off past set time limits. - ➤ On Monday afternoon, a storm with 60 mph winds left 83,000 Consumers Energy customers without power (Calhoun, Kalamazoo, and I-94 areas were hardest hit) and crews restored service for 30,000 overnight; power is expected to be restored by midnight tonight while residents follow safety guidelines. - ➤ The Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport broke ground on extending its primary runway by 450 feet—this project, partly funded by a $14 million FAA grant, is set to finish this fall and boost safety margins. 102.7 WFAT

- ➤ Rx Kids is expanding its support program for expectant mothers in Kalamazoo County starting June 1 and in Calhoun County on July 1 — offering $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 monthly for six months across 60+ communities statewide. 102.7 WFAT

- ➤ This week for Pet Adoption Tuesday, the Humane Society of West Michigan offers a chance to adopt Chewbacca, a 7+year old+ pup seeking a forever home. The society will also host Purina Free Adoption Day on Sat. May 2, waiving adoption fees for animals over 6 months. FOX 17
