COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Engine 3 firefighters will join American Red Cross volunteers to install free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in the Post/Franklin neighborhood from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3—offering special alert devices to neighbors who are hard of hearing.  Battle Creek Enquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brad Hoelscher — known as Bodega Brad and a Battle Creek Central High School and Kellogg Community College alum — won the Mixshow DJ of the Year award at the Electronic Dance Music Awards in Miami Beach on March 28, adding to his previous win in 2018.  Battle Creek Enquirer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Registration for summer and fall classes at Kellogg Community College is open; the summer session (May 19 to Aug 7) and fall session (Aug 25 to Dec 12) will offer nearly 300 courses and new degree and certificate programs. Students can register online or at any of the five campuses and are urged to sign up early as space is limited.  Battle Creek Enquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered U.S. and Michigan flags to be lowered to half-staff today to honor Battle Creek native Staff Sergeant Troy Smith Knutson-Collins (28) who died during a training exercise in Lithuania in March; his funeral is held as a tribute to his sacrifice.  102.7 WFAT
  • Michigan residents must update to Real ID in person at a local Secretary of State office by making an appointment online and bringing the required documents — a current driver's license, a U.S. passport or birth certificate, and any legal name change proof if needed — by May 7. The Real ID is needed for domestic flights and access to federal facilities and is free if updated during a license renewal or replacement.  Battle Creek Enquirer

  • Former Battle Creek Central standout Austin McKinney—an undrafted free agent from Northwest Missouri State—will attend the Cleveland Browns rookie minicamp from May 8 to May 11 in Cleveland to pursue his NFL dream. He earned the invitation after posting a strong season with nine passes defensed.  Battle Creek Enquirer
