CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Battle Creek will host a free art walk on May 15 from 5-8 p.m.—featuring over 20 local artists displaying work at neighborhood businesses and awarding cash prizes to the top three winners.  Battle Creek Enquirer

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices dropped 14¢ per gallon statewide as Triple-A Michigan reported an average of $4.73, with a 15-gallon fill now costing about $71. Marquette offers the lowest price at $4.50 while Barry County records the highest at $4.92.  102.7 WFAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kellogg Community College will hold its record commencement for 449 graduates this Thursday at Kellogg Arena - 36 West Hamblin Avenue. The ceremony begins at 7:00 p.m. - doors open at 6:00 p.m. with speeches from KCC staff, trustees and featured speakers.  102.7 WFAT
  • Vicky Groat will step down as athletic director at St. Philip after 20 years to spend more time with her family, while Blake Shaw— a former Lakeview coach who assisted her— will take over in June as she continues coaching volleyball and managing student services.  Battle Creek Enquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan Gas Utilities is offering $10,000 in grants to police, fire, and EMS agencies in southern and western Michigan for equipment or training, and applications are accepted through June 15.  Battle Creek Enquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rx Kids is expanding to more than 60 communities by summer to provide cash aid to moms before and after childbirth. The program offers $1,500 in mid-pregnancy and $500 monthly, funded by state dollars, local contributions, and private donations to help with baby basics.  Battle Creek Enquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Battle Creek Enquirer invites locals to vote for Athlete of the Week; nominees include Kobe Cordova of Harper Creek Baseball, Layla Huffman of Lakeview Girls Soccer, Kaylee Kirkpatrick of Softball and DJ Wood of track. Voting ends Wednesday at 5 p.m. with the winner featured Sunday.  Battle Creek Enquirer
