EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kellogg Community College held its 67th commencement on May 15th at Kellogg Arena, where more than 1,100 students earned their degrees. Among them, 87-year-old Maude Bristol-Perry became the college’s oldest graduate with her Associate of Arts in Early Childhood Education—she is a longtime community leader who served as mayor and county supervisor.  Battle Creek Enquirer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Battle Creek and EGLE will treat aquatic weeds in Goguac Lake near Willard Beach on Tuesday, May 20 to keep the lake healthy—residents must avoid the water for 24 hours while the beach area stays open.  City of Battle Creek
  • More than 250,000 Michigan customers lost power overnight from a severe storm that brought hurricane-force winds—gusts reached 75 mph in Battle Creek and nearby counties, causing widespread outages across southwest and other regions. Officials said online outage maps are providing the latest updates on the situation.  Battle Creek Enquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Senate Fiscal Agency reported on May 15 that Michigan’s state revenue forecasts dropped nearly $1B — with $393M less for fiscal 2025 and $561M reduced for fiscal 2026 — erasing the surplus seen in January 2023. If the Senate-passed 2026 budget is enacted, the general fund will face a $969M deficit.  Battle Creek Enquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tick season in Michigan runs from April through September and puts local residents and their pets at risk for Lyme disease and other infections. Health experts advise staying on groomed trails, wearing light-colored clothing, and using insect repellent+ removing ticks carefully if bitten.  Battle Creek Enquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lakeview girls tennis team has qualified for the state finals after finishing runner-up at Mason regionals and they have reached the tournament for the fourth straight year. Three players — sophomore Maddy Simonds, senior Sade Blackwell and Karlee Gutsue — won regional singles titles as Division 2 finals will be held in Kalamazoo on May 29.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Gavin Deal of Lakeview was named Enquirer Athlete of the Week after fans voted him 64 percent following his win as starting pitcher in the All-City Tournament championship final against Pennfield + he pitched five innings, giving up three hits and striking out three.  Battle Creek Enquirer
