A Thursday night storm left over 15,000 customers without power in Kalamazoo County, with 6,900 in Calhoun and 5,000 in Allegan; 660 restoration crews worked to fix the outages.
Officials said most power was restored by the end of Sunday and that the hardest-hit areas are expected to have service back by the end of today—Monday.
Consumers Energy — partnering with the American Red Cross — provided free water and a meal at McCamly Park on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to help Battle Creek customers who lost power during Thursday's storms.
💼 Business
Compass Group will lay off 244 contract employees who work as housekeepers, food workers and patient transporters at Ascension Borgess hospitals in Kalamazoo, Plainwell, Allegan and Dowagiac ahead of Beacon Health System's planned purchase this summer — job cuts will begin on July 1.
🏛️ Government
On May 26, government offices, banks, the Post Office and schools will be closed in observance of Memorial Day to honor fallen service members, while grocery stores like Meijer, Whole Foods Market, Target and Walmart remain open—Costco is closed and Aldi has limited hours.
