- ➤ Community volunteers transformed Blue Lake Township Park into a multi-use trail system using hand tools and thousands of service hours. The park began its change in 2023 when Scott Brannam and his wife Angel cleared debris, and it now offers nearly 5 miles of trails with plans to expand to about 10 miles—while officials seek a $120,000 grant for an ADA-accessible path and lookout onto Grass Lake. - ➤ Feeding America’s study released on May 14 found that 34,070 children, or 17.9% of kids, in the eight counties served by the South Michigan Food Bank face hunger — urging local agencies to plan new relief efforts based on the data. Battle Creek Enquirer

- ➤ Battle Creek police are investigating a shooting that occurred shortly after midnight Tuesday on the 100 block of Arbor Point Drive when an 18-year-old man was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, and officers say the incident was isolated with no ongoing threat + anyone with information is urged to contact the police or Silent Observer. 102.7 WFAT

- ➤ Kellogg Community College held its annual Student Art Show award ceremony on April 25 at the DeVries Gallery where more than $5,000 in cash awards and scholarships were given to student artists from Battle Creek and nearby areas—Rayna Crane won Best of Show for her piece Out of the Dark and new President’s Perspective Awards were given to three local artists—highlighting achievements in art, photography, multimedia and design. - ➤ Michigan is continuing its summer food assistance program that gives families an extra 40 dollars per month for kids in June, July and August after school lunches end. Families who already receive SNAP, Medicaid — or TANF automatically qualify as state health officials warn that proposed federal cuts may reduce food benefits. Michigan Public Radio
