- ➤ 14-year-old Dakoda Carpenter from Calhoun County received the 2025 Michigan Young Hero Award for her calm actions when she dialed 911 last December during a diabetic emergency involving her bonus father, James Snodderly — receiving clear guidance from Emergency Telecommunicator Christy Kubasiak until help arrived. The award was presented at the annual APCO/NENA conference in Muskegon to honor her quick thinking and bravery. 102.7 WFAT

- ➤ Battle Creek announced that Capital Avenue NE from North Avenue to Division Street North will be closed to all traffic from 6 a.m. Monday, June 9 through 6 a.m. Wednesday for new asphalt work following sewer repairs—this closure will block all vehicles including emergency services—and Battle Creek Transit routes will remain unaffected. - ➤ Planet Fitness is opening over 80 gyms in Michigan to non-members free until Sunday, June 8 so residents can exercise indoors away from Canadian wildfire smoke. The move gives people a safe workout option+ particularly in areas where air quality is poor. Battle Creek Enquirer

- ➤ At Battle Creek Country Club, 144 players began the FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship on June 6 with 58 breaking par and 15 carding rounds of 68 or better, while Carley Cox Pruette, Samantha Vodry, and Maddie Szeryk tied for the lead with 6-under scores. Local amateur Amiyah Gibson, a Lakeview high schooler, shot a 12-over 84—she will tee off for round two today at 2:20 p.m. Battle Creek Enquirer
- ➤ Okemos advanced to the regional finals after a 7-3 win over Battle Creek Lakeview when junior pitcher Sebastian Blair pitched a complete game. The Wolves will face Hartland on June 7 at Novi High School+ they aim to build on their progress in the tournament. Battle Creek Enquirer
- ➤ DJ Wood of Harper Creek was named Enquirer Athlete of the Week after fans gave him 64 percent of the vote, and he set school records by winning the 110 hurdles in 14.15 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 39.24 seconds — his win marks the school’s first two-event state champion since 2003.
