Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 24th of June.
Good morning, Battle Creek.
🏘️ Community
Battle Creek's City Kids Day will deliver free food, games, toys, haircuts, and live music to local youth and families on June 27 at noon at Kellogg Arena and Festival Market Square — parking is available at the Hamblin Avenue ramp.
🎭 Culture
Residents in Battle Creek and across Michigan will see the strawberry moon on Monday, June 29 when it reaches full illumination early in the evening + it will set low on the horizon with a golden glow that heralds the start of the strawberry harvest season.
🌲 Environment
Michigan officials (MDARD) warn residents to look out for the invasive spotted lanternfly this summer; the insect stresses plants by leaving sticky honeydew that leads to sooty mold, so residents outside confirmed areas are advised to report sightings and treat infestations with proper methods.
🏛️ Government
Gov. Whitmer said the state is appealing FEMA's denial of federal disaster aid after March tornadoes killed four and damaged homes in Branch, Cass (and St. Joseph) counties.
Officials stressed that recovery efforts for affected communities will continue.
On Oct. 1, 2025, the Transportation Authority changed its name to Ride Calhoun and continued regular bus service with the same dedicated staff in Battle Creek.
The City supports the transition through a service agreement valid until June 30, 2026 + vehicles and stop signage will show the new look soon.
