- ➤ Annie Kelley from the Calhoun County Visitors Bureau said a variety of events will begin today with Barks and Brews Night at the ball park and a Tour de Zoo bike ride after the zoo closes—other local activities include Marshall Motor Month Weekend, a free Taylor Swift Experience on Aug. 8, a Chalk Festival and Cruise the Creek on Aug. 9, the Calhoun County Fair from Aug. 11—16, a Downtown Country Jam and Caribbean Fest on Aug. 16, the BCCF Block Party on Aug. 20, Friday Nite Beats & Bites on Aug. 22, Michigan Metal Fest on Aug. 22—23, and a Backyard Burgers and Brews Festival on Aug. 23. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Michigan will host 86 county fairs this summer—Calhoun County Fair in Marshall will run from August 10th to 16th and many counties will host events with rides, games and local food. Battle Creek Enquirer
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Social Security and Supplemental Security Income payments follow the normal schedule for Michigan recipients. Beneficiaries who began receiving money before May 1997 get theirs today while others receive checks on August 13, 20, and 27—recipients who had past overpayments may see lower amounts. - ➤ Michigan law says drivers on roads with two or more lanes must use the left lane only for passing slow vehicles and may get a ticket if they drive too slowly — trucks over 10,000 pounds must stay in the two right lanes. Battle Creek Enquirer
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Canadian wildfire smoke caused an air quality advisory on July 31 with measurements reaching 217 in parts of the Upper Peninsula, and many cities in the Lower Peninsula also reported unhealthy air. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities and check local air quality dashboards for any changes. Battle Creek Enquirer
