BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spirit Halloween will open 40 seasonal stores across Michigan this fall—many in August—and the local Battle Creek store at 5575 B Drive North will open soon. The retailer will offer themed merchandise including costumes and decor for all ages.  Battle Creek Enquirer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan DNR warned yesterday that golden oyster mushrooms—native to Asia and grown here—may threaten local forests as recent studies show these invasive fungi could harm native mushroom species. The department urged residents to log sightings on iNaturalist and to take care when growing them.  Michigan Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Battle Creek City Commission unanimously approved nearly $20 million to renovate two fire stations, expand one, and build three new ones. Interim City Manager Ted Dearing said the updated stations will be modernized for both male and female firefighters + meet federal accessibility standards.  102.7 WFAT
  • Calhoun County Treasurer Melinda Weaver was recognized in July with the Service Award from the Association of Public Treasurers for her leadership in public finance. She was appointed in May after 11 years of service and was congratulated by the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Pastor Theresa Hirakis has been appointed as the new chaplain for the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, bringing more than 10 years of jail ministry and victim support experience. She led the Women’s Ministry at the county jail and coordinated victim services—experience that will help support law enforcement and the community.  Battle Creek Enquirer
