  • The SHARE Center, a Battle Creek shelter serving over 1,750 people each year, may close if it does not secure extra funds after Medicaid cuts have reduced revenue by $85,000 and created a projected $160,000 shortfall before its fiscal year ends on September 30. Local activists have formed Friends of SHARE Center to close an $82,000 funding gap by December (60% of its funding comes from Medicaid) while the center relies on a $760,000 annual budget.  Battle Creek Enquirer

CRIME NEWS

  • Battle Creek police say a 32-year-old man is in stable condition after being stabbed multiple times early Friday near Michigan Avenue and Division Street—investigators report he was taken to a Kalamazoo hospital after an argument among three people turned violent and suspects fled the scene.  102.7 WFAT
  • Calhoun County Sheriff's Office arrested two men in a week-long human trafficking and child exploitation investigation—Daniel Joseph Styler, 58 from Battle Creek and Stephen Allen Mayne, 45 from Savannah—for allegedly attempting to engage in sexual activity with a minor and using a computer to facilitate the crime.  102.7 WFAT
  • On Thursday night in Battle Creek, police arrested a man who fired his gun during a domestic dispute around 9:30 when he shot at two cars—one bullet hit a car and another struck a nearby home, and no one was injured.  FOX 17

  • Former state health director Robert Gordon spent a year and $30 million building Michigan’s Medicaid work requirements that nearly left 80,000 people uninsured in early 2020 + he now warns that similar systems in 40 states could put millions at risk of losing coverage by 2034.  Michigan Public Radio

  • Joe Costello— the longtime boys basketball coach at Bellevue High School with 272 wins and eight league championships over 15 years— has resigned due to health issues and a desire to spend more time with his grandchildren.
