ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Battle Creek Fire Department responded to a house fire on Grand Circle Avenue Saturday morning after a 911 call and removed a trapped victim from the burning home; despite life-saving efforts the victim and two dogs died at the scene. FOX 17
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Claire's, a mall-based fashion accessory chain, filed for bankruptcy for the second time and said that over 1,100 stores may close soon, with nearly 40 in Michigan including the Battle Creek location. The company is seeking a buyer for about 800 remaining stores and has set clearance sales at two Michigan malls to end by Sep. 7—if a deal is not made quickly, all stores may shut down. - ➤ On Aug. 7, Battle Creek police answered a call on the 100 block of Mosher Avenue when a man blocked his wife from leaving and fired his gun at nearby vehicles and a home—no one was hurt and he was arrested on charges of unlawful imprisonment and multiple weapons offenses. Battle Creek Enquirer
- ➤ Two people were arrested at a home on Maxwell Avenue in Pennfield Township after an Indiana tip led police to execute a search warrant on Thursday & both face charges of child abuse, kidnapping, and first degree criminal sexual conduct, with a 32-year-old man from Arkansas and a 29-year-old woman in custody. 102.7 WFAT
- ➤ Calhoun County police busted a large-scale auto and parts theft ring after recovering vehicles and parts worth over $200,000 from searches in several townships — they are now seeking arrest warrants for seven people facing charges including breaking and entering, receiving stolen property, and operating a chop shop. - ➤ Since 2022, Michigan drivers have paid 40% more for car insurance as firms such as Progressive and Liberty Mutual reported nearly double profits in the second quarter, according to a Consumer Federation analysis. - ➤ Michigan residents can watch the annual Perseids meteor shower this summer, with its peak tonight as Earth passes near comet debris and fireballs brighten the sky; the display will continue until August 23. Stargazers should seek dark spots far from city lights—especially along Lake Michigan—to view up to 50 to 100 meteors per hour, though an 82% full moon may partly block some of the view.
