CRIME NEWS

  • A Battle Creek driver faces charges after a crash last month that killed a Calhoun Community High School senior and seriously injured a female passenger—blood tests showed high alcohol levels and charges include operating while intoxicated, reckless driving causing death and serious injury with the driver's name withheld pending arraignment.  102.7 WFAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The DNR has stocked 18,958,000 fish in Michigan waters this year to boost fishing and balance ecosystems — crews worked 2,345 hours on 417 trips covering 91,000 miles to service 716 sites. Additional stockings will occur in the fall to add more fish.  Battle Creek Enquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Battle Creek city commissioners unanimously named Amanda Zimmerlin as the new city manager—she served as manager in Clayton from February and as assistant manager in Springdale from 2016 to 2020. She replaces interim city manager Ted Dearing, who was previously part of Rebecca Fleury's team.  102.7 WFAT
  • Michigan police will increase DUI patrols from Aug 15 to Sept 1 as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign to reduce impaired driving crashes during the busy Labor Day travel period. State and local agencies will urge residents to plan safe rides—helping keep roads safe during the holiday period.  Battle Creek Enquirer

  • Taylor Reed, a Buchanan native and MSU graduate, has joined Oaklawn Express Care and will work at the Beckley Road location in Battle Creek—she earned her master’s in Physician Assistant Studies from Western Michigan University and completed rotations at the Marshall site to build her urgent care skills.  Battle Creek Enquirer

  • Harper Creek will honor coach Ed Greenman by naming its sports complex the Ed Greenman Athletic Facility during a ceremony on Aug. 28 before the football game against Lakeview. The event will start at 7 p.m. (at the soccer field) (honoring his 30-year career).  Battle Creek Enquirer
