- ➤ Battle Creek Police charged 18-year-old Gavin Christopher Scott with operating while intoxicated causing death, reckless driving causing death, operating while intoxicated causing serious injury and reckless driving causing serious impairment in connection to a crash on July 14th at Irving Park that killed Calhoun Community High School senior Daelnn Roark and seriously injured a passenger—Scott will return to court for a probable cause hearing on Aug. 26 and a preliminary examination on Sept 2. 102.7 WFAT
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A Grid Strategies report warns that if DOE keeps more coal plants running as it did with the J.H. Campbell plant in May, residents in Michigan and other states may face an extra $3 billion in electricity costs by 2028 — a move that could raise rates by up to $6 billion nationwide. Consumers Energy and the Michigan Public Service Commission have not yet said if the DOE order ending on August 21 will be allowed to lapse. Michigan Public Radio

- ➤ Bronson BirthPlace in Battle Creek lowered its C-section rate to 18.4% for first-time moms with full-term, single, head-down babies as of February 2025—below the national goal of 23.6%—and ranked among Michigan's top hospitals for safe births; the hospital will keep using best practices with its team and the Michigan Obstetrics Initiative to care for moms and babies.
