GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Due to wet weather, the City of Battle Creek adjusted the Watkins Road reconstruction schedule after placing the base asphalt layer. Today, crews will pave one lane and apply asphalt over the culvert and driveways, and they will return on Sept. 3 or 4 to finish paving—full reopening is expected on Sept. 5 with lane shifts until restoration work is complete by Sept. 12. - ➤ Battle Creek Central opened its season with a 52-0 win over Benton Harbor on August 28, giving the Bearcats a strong start after last year's record while Coach Lorin Granger praised his team's mix of offensive and defensive play. Pennfield lost 26-32 to Otsego on a late score, and other local high school football games saw Marshall, Coldwater, Bellevue, Colon and more secure wins—marking an exciting kickoff to the season.
