BUSINESS NEWS

  • Costco is recalling its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene wine bottles sold from April 25 to August 26 because the bottles may shatter even when not handled — customers in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin should wrap them in paper towels and a plastic bag before disposing to avoid injury. Customers who received a recall letter will be eligible for a refund without returning the bottles.  Battle Creek Enquirer

ECONOMY NEWS

  • OPEC announced it will increase oil production in October by between 100,000 and 200,000 barrels per day—this move may lower oil prices and help keep gas prices near 3 dollars per gallon in West Michigan. GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said that while the extra supply could bring cheaper gas soon, prices may later rise as global oil use increases.  FOX 17

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Battle Creek gardeners are preparing to plant bulbs for a bright spring bloom as fall begins in less than a week. Experts advise planting tulips, daffodils, crocus and iris by late October — bulbs should be planted two to three times their height in depth and marked to avoid accidental disruption.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • The DNR will begin counting young walleye in lakes using electrofishing equipment this month and will continue the surveys until mid-October—biologists aim to learn if the fish are wild or stocked and to guide future fishing management.  Battle Creek Enquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marshall is improving its water and sewer systems to handle increased flow from Ford’s BlueOval Battery Park and other new projects. The city began building a new headworks building at the wastewater treatment plant to remove grit, sand and oil—helping lower costs for customers.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Calhoun County Clerk Kimberly Hinkley, who joined the association's executive committee in April 2023, was sworn in as first vice president and will become president in 2026 — representing 83 county clerks across Michigan.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Governor Whitmer warned Tuesday that state government will partially shut down in two weeks if the Legislature does not pass a bipartisan budget deal that eases the uncertainty linked to federal tariffs—issues that are adding to economic worries. UAW Local 6000 President Rachel Dickinson said about 15,000 state workers are anxious, with some considering looking for new jobs amid the ongoing stalemate.  Michigan Public Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • The West Michigan Whitecaps edged closer to a championship banner—their first in a decade—by boarding buses Monday for Tuesday’s game in Cedar Rapids at 7:35 p.m. after a 5-3 win on Sunday.  FOX 17
  • Lakeview will induct its 2025 Hall of Fame class—Sarita Dotson, Donnie Ernsberger, Matt Garland, Danielle Little and Brooke Rowe—during a ceremony at the Black Box Theater at Lakeview High School Friday, Sept 19. The meet-and-greet starts at 4:30 p.m. and the formal event will begin at 5 p.m., with the public invited to join.  Battle Creek Enquirer
