CULTURE NEWS

  • Saturn will appear bright in the night sky on Sunday, Sept. 21 when Earth moves between the planet and the sun—giving Michigan stargazers a clear chance to view its rings with a telescope under dark skies.  Battle Creek Enquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ITC will start flying helicopters today over high-voltage transmission lines in counties including Calhoun and will continue patrols through Oct.—3 to check for damaged equipment and hazardous vegetation as part of a required management program.  Battle Creek Enquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers from the University of Florida, Texas A&M, the University of California and the Texas Department of State Health Services say Chagas disease (spread by kissing bugs) is now endemic in the U.S. Michigan residents face little risk unless they travel to areas where the disease is common, with Texas A&M’s program reporting about 10,000 kissing bugs in 31 states since 2013.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Health experts say people in Michigan should get a flu shot by the end of October to help prevent severe illness during the seasonal flu, which peaks in winter. Local pharmacies and clinics offer the vaccine at little or no cost with most insurance—ensuring more people can stay protected.  Battle Creek Enquirer

  • Battle Creek high school football Week 4 has several key games on Friday at 7 p.m.—Pennfield faces Harper Creek in a rivalry, Battle Creek Central hosts Portage Central for homecoming, and other matchups include Portage Northern versus Lakeview, Jackson Northwest against Coldwater, plus Colon versus Climax-Scotts.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • The West Michigan Whitecaps won the Midwest League Championship with a 3—1 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Tuesday night. The team completed a perfect 4—0 playoff run and tied its record for the winningest regular season with 92 wins—its first championship banner in a decade.  FOX 17
  • Battle Creek Battle Jacks named new front office leaders for the 2026 season with general manager Sam Connell, field manager Chris Fletcher and Head of Baseball Strategy David Walsh Jr.—each tasked with boosting the on-field play and fan experience through better game-day offerings and upgraded concessions. The new management will also focus on enhancing player development and group hospitality before the season begins.  Battle Creek Enquirer
