  • The Battle Creek Regional History Museum will host a Michigan History Author Symposium on Sept. 27—12 authors from across Michigan will share stories and sign books for $5 tickets with limited seating available.  Battle Creek Enquirer

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Michigan’s unemployment rate fell to 5.2% in August as the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget reported 7,000 fewer jobs and 6,000 fewer unemployed people—making the state rate 0.9% higher than the national jobless rate of 4.3%.  102.7 WFAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The summer drought in West Michigan was the worst since 2012, with Holland receiving 13.7 inches of rain—over 10 inches below normal and Grand Rapids almost 9 inches below normal—while Battle Creek recorded 29 inches and Kalamazoo saw a slight rise above normal.  102.7 WFAT

  • The Battle Creek Police Department is recruiting new officers to prepare for the January 2026 Police Academy. The recruiting team—made up of officers, investigators, and support staff—seeks candidates who are ready to serve and make a difference in the community.  City of Battle Creek

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan's Department of Health issued a standing recommendation on Friday to let anyone 6 months and older get this year's COVID vaccine—because being unvaccinated is considered an underlying condition—and to give clear guidance for pharmacists following FDA restrictions.  Michigan Public Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • Battle Creek-area high school football games kept fans excited—Climax-Scotts beat Colon 77-36 on Sept. 19th at Climax High School with Liam LaSala rushing for 195 yards and scoring five touchdowns while Coldwater improved to 3-1 with a 45-20 win over Jackson Northwest. Other matchups saw Bellevue win 38-14 over St. Philip, Dowagiac defeat Marshall 41-22 and Portage Central beat Battle Creek Central 55-0—key results that shape the season’s progress.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • John U. Bacon of Michigan Public explained that the Wolverines and Spartans start their Big Ten schedules today while the Detroit Lions are set to face Baltimore on Monday and the Tigers face struggles with pitching and luck in the American League Central—each game is a test for these teams.  Michigan Public Radio
  • Harper Creek beat Pennfield 44-0 on Sept. 19 at Harper Creek High School as Brock Hibbs made two key interceptions — one returned for a touchdown that helped secure the win. The game boosted Harper Creek's record to 3-1 in Interstate 8 Conference play.  Battle Creek Enquirer
