COMMUNITY NEWS

  • With freezing temperatures and frost this week, residents in Battle Creek are advised to insulate exposed water pipes—especially in crawl spaces and attics—and drain outdoor hoses to prevent bursts that could cause water damage. Homeowners should also seal leaks, open cabinet doors for warm air, and keep thermostats at 55 degrees or above to protect against freezing conditions.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Battle Creek Fire Department will host its 10th annual Fire Prevention Week open house on Oct. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 195 E. Michigan Ave—families will tour the station to see fire equipment displays and learn about lithium battery safety.  Battle Creek Enquirer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A state report says regulated utilities will have over 8,300 MW of renewable energy online by year’s end and will more than double that capacity by 2030 to meet rising power needs. DTE Energy and Consumers Energy plan to add more solar and wind capacity to hit targets of 50% and 60% renewable power—marking a push for cleaner energy.  Michigan Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan will observe Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day on Oct. 13, with banks, the post office, and most government offices closing while grocery and retail stores remain open—Gov. Whitmer issues a proclamation for Indigenous Peoples' Day and local districts set their own school calendars.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • On October 1, 2025, the Transportation Authority of Calhoun County began operating as Ride Calhoun, replacing Battle Creek Transit while keeping the same drivers and support staff. The City of Battle Creek signed a Support Services Agreement with TACC through June 30 to maintain service and update vehicles — ensuring a smooth transition.  City of Battle Creek

SPORTS NEWS

  • Harper Creek girls golf, ranked No. 4 in state, finished as runner-up at the Division 3 regionals at Forest Akers East Golf Course on Oct. 8, which qualifies them for the state finals. They will compete at Forest Akers West on the weekend of Oct. 17-18—marking their first appearance in the final weekend since 2021.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Alex LaFleur of Harper Creek football made a record-breaking 45-yard field goal and helped his team win 46-8 in a key conference game on Oct. 4. Layla Silkworth led the cross country team to a league win with a top-10 finish, earning her the Athlete of the Week honor presented by Bronson Battle Creek Hospital.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Harper Creek beat Hastings in the first round of the district boys soccer tournament and advanced to the Division 2 semifinals after scoring a go-ahead goal with 11:17 remaining; TJ Ruble scored twice while the team played much of the match with 10 players after a red card — testing the team's resolve.  Battle Creek Enquirer
