  • A new childcare center near Bronson Hospital will open in summer 2026 to ease Battle Creek’s growing childcare shortage. Local groups, including Bronson Healthcare, Bronson Battle Creek Hospital Community Partners, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and Garden of Dreams Community Preschool and Childcare, are pooling $1.1 million—working to support local families and hospital staff.  Battle Creek Enquirer

  • FireKeepers Casino Hotel has launched a new online gaming and sports betting platform—powered by Aristocrat Interactive—that gives Michigan players live dealer games, online slots, table games and flexible deposit options. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Michigan dropped to $2.92 a gallon, the lowest rate in 2025. Triple-A Michigan said prices fell by 17 cents this week and a 15-gallon tank now costs about $43—Ann Arbor gas remains highest at $3.04 while county averages vary from $2.83 in Calhoun to $3.06 in Cass.  102.7 WFAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan lawmakers and community leaders announced that No Kings protests will be held on October 18th—aiming to support democracy and defend free speech—across Michigan and the nation. They urged citizens to stand against authoritarian actions and support democratic rights.  Michigan Public Radio
  • Social Security will distribute paperless benefits to Michigan recipients born between the 11th and 20th on October 15—marking the shift to direct deposit after paper checks ended. Despite the government shutdown impacting many federal services, Social Security offices remain open to help with account updates and essential assistance.  Battle Creek Enquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cold and flu seasons are returning this fall in Michigan and health experts urge everyone over six months old to get a flu shot by the end of October to help prevent severe illness. Flu symptoms can develop quickly while colds bring milder signs—local health providers offer vaccines at low or no cost.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Nearly 245,000 pounds of pre-cooked pasta were recalled by Nate's Fine Foods on Sept. 25 due to potential listeria contamination—this recall is part of an ongoing outbreak that has led to 20 confirmed cases and four deaths, with impacted products distributed in four states including Michigan.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • As colder fall weather sets in, Battle Creek pet owners are advised to change dog walking routines since nighttime temperatures may drop to levels that can harm dogs, especially those with thin coats, puppies, and older pets (experts say below 32°F can be dangerous).
