  • A federal judge ruled that Google illegally used its ad placement technology to divert money from news publishers—making the company liable for hurting competition. Gannett and its partners, who filed the suit in 2023, called the decision a big win in their antitrust battle.  Battle Creek Enquirer

  • Willard Library is hosting former cold case investigator Paul Holes for a discussion on his memoir Unmasked today at 6 p.m. at the Kool Family Center on W. Michigan Ave in Battle Creek—attendees can ask questions during a Q&A session before a book signing.  Battle Creek Enquirer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kellogg Community College’s Eastern Academic Center will hold a free open house on Nov. 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. at 14055 26 Mile Road in Albion—featuring tours of updated facilities, a robotics enterprise system, and a new CAD lab as it celebrates 25 years of service in eastern Calhoun County.  Battle Creek Enquirer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan hunters are preparing for the firearm deer season that will begin on Nov. 15 at 6:53 a.m. in the eastern zone; updated rules from Aug. 1 extend the late antlerless season to Jan. 11 and set a 150-yard safety zone from occupied buildings (licenses must be secured before hunting begins).  Battle Creek Enquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michael Armitage (Calhoun County's 911 leader) was honored as Public Safety Communications Center Director of the Year at the Michigan APCO meeting in Frankenmuth on Oct. 23. He led the consolidated 911 center since 2021 and upgraded its radio system with an $18 million project that now serves over 185,000 calls each year.  Battle Creek Enquirer

  • High school football in Battle Creek ended and the Battle Creek Enquirer invites local readers to vote online for the 2025 Readers Choice Football Player of the Year until 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3—nominees include players from Lakeview, Battle Creek Central, Harper Creek, Olivet, Coldwater, Climax-Scotts, Union City, Pennfield, Marshall, Galesburg-Augusta and Colon.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • The Battle Creek Enquirer invites readers to vote for the best high school libero—nominees include players from Battle Creek Central, Harper Creek, Gull Lake, St. Philip, Lakeview, Pennfield, Union City and Marshall. Voting will close at 5 p.m. Monday as part of the Best of Battle Creek series on high school volleyball.  Battle Creek Enquirer
