COMMUNITY NEWS

  • SEMCO Energy warns residents to keep natural gas meters, pressure regulators + appliance vents clear of snow and ice to prevent hazards during winter storms. Residents should gently clear soft snow and avoid shovels that can damage equipment.  Battle Creek Enquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michigan Public released a list of holiday events across the state (Dec. 5–7). In Battle Creek, the free International Festival of Lights will brighten Michigan Avenue until Dec. 31.  Michigan Public Radio

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Regional gas prices fell to an average of $2.74 per gallon on Monday, down from $2.86 last week, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). A year ago, prices were 6% higher and the Midwest average is about 8% below the national price.  Battle Creek Enquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan law prohibits flashing lights on vehicles to prevent distractions & confusion with emergency vehicles. Battle Creek residents may still use festive holiday decor like wreaths and reindeer antlers for car decoration.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • MDOT awarded $3.9M in grants to improve local roads, including resurfacing Union Street from M-66 to Interstate 94 Business Loop in Battle Creek. The funding, announced on Dec. 4 at 11:55 a.m. ET, supports upgrades that will boost safety and access for commercial traffic statewide.  Battle Creek Enquirer
  • Michigan’s DNR says muzzleloader season begins today and runs until Dec. 14, with rules limiting weapon types + requiring hunter orange for most users. Hunters must also follow guidelines for safely transporting unloaded firearms in vehicles.  Battle Creek Enquirer

  • Bronson Healthcare announced three new executives on Dec. 4; Michael Hamaker will lead post-acute care, Darrell Keeling heads IT and cybersecurity, and Michele Szczypka oversees marketing + these appointments are set to boost patient care and digital services.  Battle Creek Enquirer

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Home sale prices in Calhoun County fell in September, with the median price dropping from $178,000 to $175,000 and single-family homes down 2.9% to $170,000 while recorded sales increased 18.1% from 171 to 202 compared to last September.  Battle Creek Enquirer
